![]() Welcome to VFKIDS… a website dedicated to the children involved in the Virtue Foundation Louisiana Education Initiative ("LEI") In the face of extraordinary challenges resulting from the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the children involved in the LEI have continued to excel in their education goals. It is Foundation's hope that the sharing of their experiences, stories and other contributions may serve to pay recognition to the work they have achieved as well as to inspire other students in their educational goals. Since its inception in 2005, the LEI has had a transformative impact on the lives of many students, teachers and educators by addressing the critical need for a technology-based 21st Century education, while at the same time acting as catalyst for hope and rebuilding in the unique environment of post-hurricane Louisiana. The LEI demonstrates that by addressing the digital divide in our own backyard we can empower children with a positive educational experience, while simultaneously providing them with access to the tools they will need to succeed in today's world. This dedicated space for children to share their vision, hopes and dreams using a technology rich format, helps to bring awareness of the impact of initiatives like LEI and the importance of providing a 21st Century education to each and every child so that they will have the necessary tools to compete in an increasingly competitive, global environment of the future. ![]() The Louisiana Education Initiative ("LEI") was launched in 2005 to support and encourage school-aged children impacted by storms, many of whom had been displaced. Since its inception, the initiative has sought to be a catalyst for hope and rebuilding of their lives and communities. Starting with a donation of 60 computers, the Louisiana Education Initiative expanded in response to its successful track record and in September 2006 Virtue Foundation donated laptops, software, equipment and training worth more than $1 million to schools throughout Louisiana, spearheading the development of a state-of-the-art technology-enabled educational model for all students throughout the state. Today, the positive effects of the initiative have reverberated both within the education budgeting process, as is evident with the Louisiana's Legislature's approval of a $5 million appropriation for a similarly-modeled statewide laptop education pilot for 6th grade students, as well as in the lives of individual students who have started to use technology not only to improve basic academic skills but also to create personal digital stories of survival post-Katrina and Rita, which are featured on VFKids.org. |
